Yershov's (Sapozhnikov's) house

17th century merchant's palace The house was built by Semyon Yershov, the richest merchant of Gorokhovets and one of the top hundred richest merchants of Russia.
It is a magnificent example of the old Russian stone domestic architecture.
The house is located at the foot of Puzhalova Hill.
Its monumental body dominates among wooden buildings. The façade decoration is characteristic of Russian patterning of the late 17th century. The interiors represent the same period, with vaulted walls and staircases inside the walls.
Originally, the house had three storeys, just like it does now, including the basement (podklet), but the upper storey was wooden as in most similar town houses of Gorokhovets.
In late 18th century, the wooden storey was replaced by the existing stone one due to dilapidation, and an entrance annexe of three storeys was built. The gate of the ancient fence of the site, showing an example of Old Russian architecture of small forms, has survived to this day. It is the only wooden architecture monument of the 17th century preserved in the Vladimir Region.
