Kanonnikov's house

The merchant's palace of the 17th century is notable for its austerity and asceticism. It currently houses an archaeological exposition named Gorokhovets in Russian History: Heritage of Generations. The Kanonnikov brothers, owners of the house, were regarded as ‘prominent citizens’ of Gorokhovets. They held high elective positions in the ‘civil services’.
The Kanonnikovs owned the mansion for several centuries.

They lived modestly, and this affected the finishing of the house. It looks unassuming and even ascetic, and differs from other palaces, especially due to the absence of decorative surrounds of the second floor windows.

The built-in grand staircase leading from the first floor hall to the second floor was an innovation for the Gorokhovets architecture. This was the next step in the development of the old Russian porch when it began to turn from the building's exterior element into interior one. Its layout did not differ from similar houses of the 17th century. An interesting feature of the interiors is the underfloor heating system; fragments of the chimney inside the brick floors have survived to this day.

In 2018, Kanonnikov's house hosted the archaeological exposition named Gorokhovets in Russian History: Heritage of Generations.
