Oparin's House

Oparins' House is of great interest for researchers of civil architecture of Old Russian towns of the 17th century and is one of the most remarkable historical and cultural monuments of Gorokhovets. Unlike other merchant's palaces of the period, the house has undergone few changes and retains an almost pristine appearance.
The house of Oparin, a rich Gorokhovets merchant, is situated on the bank of the Klyazma river.

According to legend, at first the front porch of the house had faced the town, and all the townspeople had admired its beauty, but the Annunciation Cathedral built on the money of Yershov (another Gorokhovets merchant), blocked Oparin's estate. Oparin then moved the porch to the opposite side of the house, deliberately turning it away from the cathedral, and the front porch of the house became clearly visible from the river.

The Oparins' house was built at the end of the 17th century in the old Russian architectural traditions of stone architecture. The exterior decoration of the façade walls run counter to the traditions of the time. The window decorations are practically identical, while the other architectural structures of the 17th century dazzle with a variety of forms and carved decorations on the window surrounds.

Currently, Oparin's house is used as a registry office.
