St. George Cathedral
The Saint George Cathedral dating back to the 13th century is an architectural masterpiece of Vladimir-Suzdal Rus. The ornamentation and decoration of its facades strike the imagination. The cathedral is covered with white stone carvings all over from its bottom to the dome. Biblical scenes and mythical beings, beautiful sirin birds, smiling lions with their tongues put out, centaurs and dragons coexist peacefully here. All this diversity of human and animal figures is entwined with by floral ornamentation in form of a patterned carpet. The indoor premises of the cathedral include a small collection of carved white stones, and the principal and most well-known of them is the Svyatoslav's Cross. It is mentioned on the stone located to the right of the crucifix. The stone says, 'This life-giving cross was made by Prince Svyatoslav in the summer of 1224'.
