Murom Museum of History and Arts

The museum's art collections stem from the collection of Count Aleksey Uvarov (1824–1884) and Countess Praskovya Uvarova (1840–1924) from the Karacharovo estate near Murom. The collection was brought to the Museum in 1918.

1919 год

The Murom collection of the old Russian art is one of the most significant and distinctive in Central Russia. It boasts a harmonious combination of icons and items of applied art made by local masters and masters from the capitals during the period from the 14th to the 19th centuries.

The Murom Museum was opened in 1918 in the Zvorykins' house (4 Pervomayskaya ul.). For 70 years it was the main and only museum building.

Now, the Museum consists of several sites:
Art Gallery
6 Pervomayskaya ul., Murom

Exhibition Centre (the Golubevs' House)
13 Moskovskaya ul., Murom

The Zvorykins' House
4 Pervomayskaya ul., Murom

Commercial and Industrial Bank Building
16 Sovetskaya ul., Murom

The Art Gallery is an architectural monument of the early 19th century, the former town hall. Since 1996, it has been hosting the exposition of Russian and West-European Art of the 17th to 19th centuries. It is based on the collection of Counts Uvarovs, which was moved to the museum from their estate in Karacharovo.

Exhibition Centre (the Golubevs' House) At first, temporary exhibitions were held here, and after the closure of the Zvorykins' House, expositions on the history of the city of the 18th and 19th centuries and Old Russian art were moved to the Exhibition Centre.

In 2014, the museum received the building of the Commercial and Industrial Bank, as the reconstruction of the Zvorykins' House required new premises to house the museum pieces. The stone two-storey house with outbuildings was built in the 1880s.

The last house in the Museum area is 17 Vorovskogo ul. The Murom Museum received it in 2019. The mansion was owned by Vasily Fursov, a peasant from Bolshoye Okulovo, Murom district. A restoration project has been developed for the building.
