Kalach monument
Murom kalach can definitely be called one of the oldest and most popular bakery products in Russia. The Murom kalach, which is also referred to as 'beaten' one appeared much earlier than its Moscow counterpart, back in the 14th century. It is believed that the owners of the city bakeries once adopted it from Tatars; in Tatar 'kalach' literally means ‘be hungry’, which is the Tatar equivalent of 'bon appetite'.
