Kalach monument

The monument to the Murom Kalach was opened on 4 August 2012, the day of the city's 1150th anniversary. Kalach is one of the symbols of Murom, which can even be found on the city's coat of arms.
Murom kalach can definitely be called one of the oldest and most popular bakery products in Russia. The Murom kalach, which is also referred to as 'beaten' one appeared much earlier than its Moscow counterpart, back in the 14th century. It is believed that the owners of the city bakeries once adopted it from Tatars; in Tatar 'kalach' literally means ‘be hungry’, which is the Tatar equivalent of 'bon appetite'.
