Svyato-Blagoveshchensky Monastery

The Murom Blagoveshchensky (Annunciation) Monastery was established in 1553 by Tsar Ivan the Terrible. It was erected on the site of a modest wooden church of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Its construction is attributed to Prince Konstantin (Yaroslav) Svyatoslavich, the son of Prince Svyatoslav of Chernigov, the grandson of the great Prince Yaroslav the Wise of Kiev.

The Monastery is centred around the Annunciation Cathedral. Looted and destroyed by Poles in 1616, it was rebuilt in 1664. In the early 17th century, the gate church was erected, and, at the turn of the 20th century, the cell buildings and the hegumen's house were built.

During the Patriotic War of 1812, the Vladimir Icon of the Mother of God, the main relic of Vladimir Russia, was kept in the monastery.
