Murom
Probably, there is no single person who has not heard of Ilya Muromets, the most legendary native of Murom, the hero of epics and the pride of Rus. In Murom, you can visit not only the sights associated with the name of the epic hero, but also take part in the animation programmes of the Historical and Art Museum and the House of Folk Art on the related topics.

Thousands of tourists and pilgrims come annually to the Trinity Monastery, where the relics of the blessed Murom princes Peter and Fevronia, patrons of family and marriage, rest. Tourists certainly visit the monument to Peter and Fevronia, which has been recently installed on Trinity Square. It is believed that if you rub the nose of the bunny that sits at Fevronia’s feet, your wish will come true. And you need to make a wish for something that is certainly related to family happiness. Since 2008, in Russia, on the day of memory of Peter and Fevronia, 8 July, the Day of Family, Love and Fidelity is celebrated, and Murom becomes the capital of this holiday.

To get to know the history of Murom better, you should definitely visit the Historical and Art Museum, which occupies several buildings that are among the cultural heritage of Murom. One of them is the house of the Zvorykin merchants where Vladimir Kozmich Zvorykin, the world-famous scientist, the 'father of television', was born and spent his childhood.

The museum's art gallery is sometimes called the 'Murom Hermitage', and there is some truth in this, as the museum has art and historical collections of great value. The gallery holds not only works by Russian artists but also those by Italian, Flemish, and Dutch ones. One can see works by Rubens, Ribera, and Tiepolo not only in the Louvre but also in ancient Murom.

Murom kalachs baked according to a special recipe, have been widely known outside the city for centuries. Even Empress Catherine II found them delicious, and, since then, the city’s coat of arms has been decorated with three kalachs as a symbol of the hospitality of its people.
