Petushki

In the census books of 1678, Petushki was first mentioned as a village on the Great Vladimir Road, on the banks of the Berezka river.

There are many versions explaining the name of the city. The most common of them is associated with the robber's 'cockcrow' (in Russian, 'петушки' [petush'ki] means cock), a signal for attack, which was used by robbers attacking travellers. The legends say that merchants going to the fair prayed: “Carry us, Lord, through the Black River, Petushki, Lemeshki and birds' ravines”.

In 1861, due to the construction of the Moscow – Nizhny Novgorod railway, the Petushki station was founded to be later merged with the village. This is how the settlement of the same name was formed. The station building and residential buildings for railway workers were the first stone buildings in the settlement. The construction of the railway gave impetus to the development of industry, and soon the Krasheninnikov brothers opened the first weaving factory here. Petushki became a city in 1965.
