Mother of God Nativity Monastery

The Mother of God Nativity Monastery is a male monastery located in Vladimir. Before the Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius was founded, this monastery was the heart and soul of monastic life in North-Eastern Rus.
It's difficult to pin down the exact date of the monastery's foundation. According to the historical sources we have, the monastery was founded between 1197 and 1206 by Grand Prince Vsevolod III Yuryevich the Big Nest.

On 23 November 1263, in the cathedral of the Mother of God Nativity Monastery, in the south-west corner under the choirs, Grand Prince Alexander Yaroslavich Nevsky was laid to rest. In 1723, Archimandrite Sergius was given the great honour of receiving the highest decree from Emperor Peter the Great to transfer the relics of Alexander Nevsky to St. Petersburg.

In the Laurentian Chronicle, which most scholars believe is a copy of the Vladimir Chronicle from 1305, on the first leaf there is a record from the 16th to the early 17th century: ‘Book of the Mother of God Nativity Monastery of Vladimir’. According to A.N. Nasonov, it was in the Mother of God Nativity Monastery that the monk Lavrenty compiled his chronicle, and the Trinity Chronicle was written here.

Now, the monastery houses a museum dedicated to Alexander Nevsky.
