Pokrov is the second large settlement in the Petushki district. The history of the city begins with the Anthony Hermitage and the Intercession Monastery founded at the beginning of the 16th century on the small river Shitka, the left tributary of the Klyazma. The area surrounding the monastery was called in ancient acts the Argunovo volost, which was subordinated to Pereslavl-Zalessky, as evidenced by the scribe books of 1628. The village of Pokrovskoye soon appeared near the monastery, which in 1778 was transformed into Pokrov, a chief town of its district in the Vladimir province.

Location
The city of Pokrov is located 80 km from Vladimir and 110 km from Moscow. The M-7 Volga federal highway (Moscow – Ufa) passes through the city as well as the new Trans-Siberian Railway (Pokrov station is 4 km from the city).
Pokrov lies halfway from Moscow to Vladimir on Vladimirka, an ancient road to Siberia. The favorable geographical location of the city contributed to its economic growth and by the end of the 19th century there were 449 trading establishments and 19 inns in the county, and the main trade of the inhabitants "... consisted in obtaining income from the station passing along the Bolshaya Vladimirskaya road from the lower towns to Moscow and St. Petersburg".
For a long time there was a coach station (a place to change horses and have a rest for coachmen and their passengers) here. Named in honour of the Feast of the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the city really gave the tired traveller reliable protection, warmth and rest. Horses were changed here and supplies were replenished. A.N. Radishchev, A.S. Pushkin, A.I. Herzen stayed in the inns of Pokrov.
Nowadays, the exhibitions of the Pokrov local history museum (the Post Station and the Inn) show the history of coachmen's work.
